Nobel Peace Prize 2023

Narges Mohammadi

Human Rights Activist

This year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to honor Narges Mohammadi opens in a new tab “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all” (Nobelprize.org opens in a new tab). For the past 20 years, Narges has been an activist and has been arrested 13 times. Currently, she is locked up in one of Teheran’s most notorious prisons.

In fall of 2022, Iran experienced major protests after the gruesome death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who was killed for not properly covering her hair. The demonstrations that followed took many women’s lives in Iran. Narges was at the forefront of these protests, from captivity.

Narges responded to winning the Nobel Peace Prize with the following: “I will never stop striving for the realization of democracy, freedom and equality. Surely, the Nobel Peace Prize will make me more resilient, determined, hopeful and enthusiastic” (Nobelprize.org opens in a new tab). View the Nobel Prize Award ceremony. opens in a new tab
