August 9 — International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples opens in a new tab

According to the UN, there are over 476 million indigenous people living across the world (about 6.2 % of the global population). Indigenous people have special relationships with their land and are holders of a unique culture including traditions, languages, and knowledge systems. This year’s focus is on “Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact”.

August 12 — International Youth Day opens in a new tab

A day for celebrating young people’s actions and initiatives, as well as valuing their universal and equitable engagement. This year’s theme is “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development”.


August 13 — Obon: Three Day Festival (Japan)

This festival is part of a Japanese Buddhist custom, to honor our ancestral spirits. This custom has evolved in family reunions, in which people return to visit their ancestor’s graves and create household altars. The three days of celebration differ by region in Japan.


August 26 — Women’s Equality Day

In 1920, the 19th amendment was certified stating that a vote shall not be denied based on someone’s sex. Women finally received the right to vote!
