September 21 — International Day of Peace opens in a new tab
On September 21, the world celebrates International Peace Day. This year the theme is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals. “This theme is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will create a culture of peace for all.” (internationaldayofpeace.org).
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate this day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire. “We want this day to be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” (internationaldayofpeace.org).
