At Gayshí
By Kim Moberg
(Chorus)
At gayshí, At gayshí, sing to the trees
Lift your voice to the top of the trees
At gayshí, At gayshí, let’s sing to the trees
Imagine that you are a tree
Trees are home to so many beings
Kangaroos and birds and bees
Sheltering with their branches and leaves
They give us the air that we breathe
(Chorus)
Connected by roots, to share what they need
Their power is community
Ancient like the wind and as old as the breeze
They belong to Mother Earth’s family
(Chorus)
Just like you, just like me
There are differences you will see
Just like you, just like me
Each one has its own beauty
(Chorus)
Whether you are a Birch, or an Evergreen
Mighty Oak, or Mahogany
Willow, a Pine, or Hickory
Stand tall, be proud, like a tree
(Chorus)
Kim Moberg tells us the background behind her song
Written for The Know Better Do Better Project. This is an alternative song inspired by the song “What Makes a Red Man Red”, from the Disney musical, “Peter Pan”.
“The Know Better Do Better Project seeks to encourage conversation and awareness of songs that have played a role in sustaining systemic racism, and the writing of new alternative songs. We believe that by facing our music history, creating new songs, and making informed decisions about the songs we choose to sing, we amplify the positive power of music to shape a more just and inclusive world.”
