Peaceful Pieces: Poems and Quilts About Peace opens in a new tab

By Anna Grossnickle Hines opens in a new tab

Henry Holt, 2011.

The author also includes a section in the back entitled “Peacemakers” with photos, quotes, and short biographical information of 8 influential peacemakers in our world’s history, including Mandela, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. Also included is information on the quilting community and some of the techniques used to create the Hines’ illustrations with process and methods.

Readers will be inspired by the presentation. Creating a peaceful and caring environment is something that often gets overlooked in our world filled with competition.

This book explains “peace” from different perspectives, and during different experiences. It explores what peace is, and how it is defined, and how it can be felt. In the classroom, this book can be used to discuss kindness and diversity. Despite the many differences among cultures and countries, we do share much in common.

I feel that poems like “Making an Entrance,” “An Invitation,” and “Where I Live,” “Weapons,” “What If” and “Peace Sign” are impressive, as well as this one:

Peace: a Recipe
Open minds — at least two.
Willing hearts — the same.
Rinse well with compassion.
Stir in a fair amount of trust.
Season with forgiveness.
Simmer in a sauce of respect.
A dash of humor brightens the flavor.
Best served with hope.

Truly inspired students would be encouraged to write poetry and illustrate their masterpieces.

“PEACE IS when all of them are us.”
