As we marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, many early childhood education organizations are reflecting on how educators can help nurture a more peaceful and compassionate world for future generations. One such organization is Educators for Peaceful Classrooms and Communities (EPCC) (Exchange Press).
Their mission states: “As Educators, our mission is to impart the values of peace to the community, families, and most of all to children, as they are keepers of the future. We believe that a way to accomplish that end is to start by educating young children, teachers, and families in ways of being peaceful.”
To support this important work, Exchange offers the Out of the Box Training, “Cultivating Compassionate Classrooms.” This professional learning opportunity provides research-based strategies and reflective practices that help educators strengthen children’s social-emotional development, build empathy, and create more peaceful classroom communities where kindness and compassion can flourish.
Creating Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms
As we begin a new school year, educators have a unique opportunity to create classroom environments where every child feels safe, valued, and supported. While some children eagerly embrace new routines and relationships, others may enter the classroom carrying the effects of traumatic experiences that can influence their behavior, learning, and social interactions. Understanding the impact of trauma can help teachers respond with empathy and effective strategies that foster resilience and success.
In Creating Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms, Katie Statman-Weil explains how early trauma affects children’s brain development, emotional regulation, relationships, and academic growth. The article offers valuable insights and practical approaches for building trauma-sensitive learning environments where children can thrive through consistent, nurturing relationships and supportive classroom practices (Statman-Weil, 2015).
